About Art Roll

A free public art map, artist directory and living cultural archive.

What Art Roll is

Art Roll is a free public art map and artist directory that helps people discover the Gold Coast through the art found across its streets, laneways and neighbourhoods.

There is no booking, fixed route or timetable. Choose a neighbourhood, open the map and start a mural hunt. It might be an hour spent exploring between local cafés and shops, or a multi-day journey through the city's creative communities.

At its heart, Art Roll connects people with public art, artists with new audiences, and visitors with the places and stories that sit beyond the Gold Coast's best-known attractions.

Where it started

Developed on the Gold Coast by Nicole Klein and Maddy Ellis (Habitat), Art Roll launched on 20 September 2022 with support from the City of Gold Coast's Creative Tourism Grants Program.

It began with a simple observation: the city already had a remarkable open-air gallery, but much of it was undocumented, with nowhere to discover it all in one place. The original self-guided trail brought together nearly 100 murals by more than 75 artists.

Art Roll was promoted by Experience Gold Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland. It was included in the City of Gold Coast's Active & Healthy program, featured in local and international media including The Weekend Edition, Blank Street Press and the New Zealand Herald, and named a finalist in the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards.

2023 to 2026

Maintained by volunteers

After the initial grant period ended, Art Roll continued as a free, volunteer-maintained project. Every new artist profile and artwork page had to be researched, created and updated by hand.

The website and map remained accessible, but keeping hundreds of listings accurate and current was beyond what a small team could sustain. That experience directly shaped the 2026 rebuild, giving artists and the public the tools to update and grow the map themselves.

Back on a roll

Thanks to partial funding from a City of Gold Coast Arts Development Fund grant, Art Roll returned as a completely rebuilt platform designed to be maintained and grown by artists and the public.

It now features more than 130 artworks and over 90 artists. Artists can claim an existing profile or create their own, manage their information and add new work. The Public Submissions feature allows anyone to add a mural they discover or contribute photos to an existing listing.

Art Roll can also preserve murals that have been painted over or are no longer accessible, creating a lasting record so the art and the artists behind it are not forgotten.
